I thought that I had figured out my spiritual disciplines for Lent this year. The Church calls us to honor the season of Lent by…selfexamination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy Word. So along with deeper study and more prayer, I decided that I would abstain from coffee again this year as my discipline of self-denial. Recognizing where we put out time and energy and passion tells what we value and what we value, informs our day-to-day decisions and puts us on the path for accomplishing long term, complex goals and the desires of our heart. How we identify ourselves indicates what is most true about ourselves, what we love most, whether we see the world as a fundamentally safe or dangerous place, and how we want the world to engage with us.
AM Faith CME Sunday morning worship

Despite the denomination’s restrictions, a growing group of gay clergy had been ordained over the past decade, including two openly gay bishops. According to the Reconciling Ministries Network, there are 324 gay UMC clergy in the U.S., including candidates for ordination. The St. Margaret’s youth program had a truly fantastic calendar year full of fun programs and retreats, small group discussions, and a fair amount of silliness. Our students have taken Jesus’ call to make disciples seriously and have been inviting friends, and friends of friends, to our Sunday evening meetings. We appreciate the youth and parents who worked very hard to juggle what life throws at them while still managing to read all of Elizabeth’s weekly news and respond to texts.
Rector’s Welcome
We are excited about our shared ministry together, and look forward to the new and exciting things God has planned for this Holy place. You can also worship with us via the Christ Church app and Facebook Live. The broadcast video remains available on the website through midday Wednesday each week.
Week at a Glance at St. Martin’s: Be With.
After the 2019 General Convention, some 7,600 traditionalist churches across the United States — about 25% of the total number of U.S. churches — left the denomination, fearing that the tightening of the bans would not hold. The morning vote on the motion was part of a larger series of calendar items voted on in bulk. If you are looking for a church to call your own, we hope you will consider us!
United Methodists strike down ban on ordination of gay clergy

St. Martin's Episcopal Church history begins in 1887 in a small schoolhouse in a mill neighborhood of Charlotte, known then as Mechanicsville. Rev. Joseph B. Cheshire, Rector of Saint Peter's Episcopal Church, the mother church of Episcopal parishes in Charlotte, started a Sunday School mission in this small neighborhood. St. Martin's Church became a focal point for the neighborhood, and several other churches in the community held their organizational meetings in its buildings. The first Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops in the city were started at St. Martin's. The parish gained a reputation for hosting bazaars of overflowing popularity.
Theologically, it is a time in which the Church looks back in remembrance to the great gift of our Savior’s birth, while at the same time looking forward to the promised second Coming of Jesus to reign as Lord of His re-created cosmos. The word Advent comes from the Latin word adventus, which means coming, which is where this season gets its name and meaning. Saint Margaret’s Episcopal Church is an exciting, vibrant, growing, and sacramentally centered parish in the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina and a member of the worldwide Anglican Communion! Located in Waxhaw, North Carolina, we are located just south of Charlotte in one of the fastest growing counties of the state.
Galilee Sunday
A rich choral music tradition, dating at least to the 1920s, involved separate choirs for boys, girls, and adults. Choirs for young people were re-established in 1992 as the Choir School at St. Peter’s, now Charlotte Choir School. The school serves nearly 100 choristers, ages 7 to 18, from across the region.
United Methodist Church Reverses Ban on Practicing Gay Clergy
A large majority of African bishops, while affirming their opposition to LGBTQ ordination or marriage, have said in a joint statement they are committed to remaining in the United Methodist Church. Jerry Kulah of the advocacy group Africa Initiative said that while it will be up to individual conferences in Africa to decide whether to stay or leave the denomination, he believes it’s time to leave. Bishop Karen Oliveto of the Mountain Sky Episcopal Area, the first openly lesbian bishop ordained in the church, said the tenor of the current conference is positive.
Therefore, as I did seven years ago, I will enter a time of sabbatical on July 4th and return to Saint Margaret’s on October 4th. Each week dedicated volunteers share a lesson with our students and learn and practice the three principles of Love God, Love Neighbor, and Love Self. We do this through studying Bible stories, listening to children’s books from a variety of authors, and engaging in discussion, games, and crafts. Each month we will have a service project during class to highlight what we’ve learned. This month we will learn about Saint Margaret’s Card Ministry and spread love with encouraging cards. It is a time of year that brings joy, anticipation, family, craziness, and all sorts of varied activities.
I’m tired of ministry via email, text message, and a computer screen. Don’t get me wrong; I am thankful that I have these tools by which I can stay connected to everyone, but I still do not like it. I cannot remember a time in my life when so many difficult circumstances were present in our society. Racial divisions, political turmoil, national unrest, war, poverty, disease. One identifier that is often not as easily shared is our relationship with our faith.

In 1952, the Church building and the Parish House (built in 1948) were badly damaged by fire. The Church was enlarged when it was rebuilt, and in 1959, a Youth Building was added. The votes reverse prohibitive policies toward LGBTQ people taken on at the denomination’s 2019 General Convention, when delegates doubled down and tightened bans on gay clergy and same-sex marriage. Today, however, St. Martin's is active and growing, with members of all ages, coming from a wide geographic area. People who attend St. Martin's today are here because of a strong commitment to outreach, emphasis on Christian formation and education programs for children, youth, and adults, and a commitment to radical Christian hospitality.
At the root of all we do is our desire to build a community where Christ’s love is known and shared by supporting each other, serving our neighbors and sharing our abundant gifts. It has long been the practice of the Church to remember those saints who have gone before us; those whose lives serve as a testament to the power of living a life following Jesus Christ. Given that every Sunday is dedicated as a feast day of our Lord, we seldom get to honor individual saints or hear of their stories during our weekend liturgies.
The act of praying should be a daily discipline for all followers of Jesus. Our Lord faithfully set aside time to find a quiet spot and to connect with His Father so that He might discern God’s will, align Himself with that Divine Will, and gain strength from the presence of the Almighty. At other times, it’s a revelation of something bigger, something amazing, that can make you stop and realize what wonderful gifts God has blessed you with. As I write this article it is officially day three of the fifty days of Easter. It is the most glorious season of the year, and it gives the beloved followers of Jesus the chance to give thanks for the resurrection of our Lord, and for the new life He offers to us and to His entire Church.
